This is a a genuine vintage 1970s GPO ivory 746 tabletop rotary dial telephone. These telephones were refurbished by BT in 1993 as warranty replacements, but never issued. The outer plastic casings are all 100% original GPO/BT products, the only new items added are the ivory line cable and the generic number card. These superb phones were fitted with a BT 21A electret condenser microphone to enhance the standard speech quality.
If you're looking for a genuine 1970s GPO 746 phone - this is it! They're in fabulous condition and we are delighted to have located them. This telephone uses analogue (pulse) dialling technology, please ensure with your service provider that this equipment is compatible with your telephone line before ordering. If you are planning to connect this telephone to a Virgin Media hub, then the BT to RJ11 adaptor they provide will work, but the phone won't ring - this is because it doesn’t incorporate a ringing capacitor. To deal with this, we have sourced a different adaptor which looks very similar to the Virgin one but ours does have the capacitor.
We are very happy to answer questions, but we are not expert in all the various telecoms companies now out there and cannot say that the phone will definitely work in anything other than a standard BT/Virgin Media phone socket or in a Virgin Super Hub (with the adapter as mentioned).
* Technical Info: These phones date from 1971-1985 - they were converted by BT into plan phones (a basic business switchboard) and stored as replacement items for possible customer warranty claims. They have been stored in a warehouse ever since and all we have done is reconfigure the internal wiring to reinstate them as standard 746 telephones.
